Cardiff Warriors are TRIPLE CROWN CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 SEPTEMBER 2010

Warriors calm the Storm to open the season

The Cardiff Warriors 1sts hosted last years undeafeated D1 champs & also Terry Price cup champs, Swansea Storm this past sunday 24/10/10 in our season opener. A lot of people were expecting the Storm to go undefeated again this season, given the fact that they have recruited massively by adding Welsh international & former D1 Bristol Flyers player Mike Gregory, also with the Return of fellow welsh international Matt Daw, along with new signings, fellow welsh international Gareth Priddle, his brother Robbie Priddle who is a former National league player also & American center Joseph Womack, who also currently plays in the National league.

The Warriors have also recruited heavily this season (see below for new recruits) & have the core of last years team back with the club this season & were ready to seek redemption after blowing a 24 point lead to the Storm in last years cup final.

Without going into too much detail, the game was back & forth for the duration & remained at about a 5 point lead for either team for the majority of the game. The Storm did go up by 10+ points at one point in the 1st half, but with Warriors point guard Sid Khan feeding the ball inside to Patrick Likkoso & Big Tony for high percentage shots they were able to keep chipping away & bring the game back. Matt Daw was fouled out early which really hurt the Storm, just as Asa Waite also fould out for the Warriors moments later. 6 players in total were fould out in what was an extremely physical & high energy game, with much more of a National league feel to it than local league. An alleyoop dunk by Storms Womack stunned the crowd & got everyone out of their seats, but the 3 point shooting of the Warriors, especially from game MVP Edris (Eddie) Kizito kept the Warriors in the lead until the final minuite of the game, at which point saw the Storm trying to stop the clock by fouling on purpose & sending the Warriors to the freethrow line. The Warriors newlyt signed 'silent assasisns' from Latvia (Sandy & janis) came off the bench to seal the victory by knocking down extremely clutch free throws in the final seconds. An epic game to be part of as I'm sure the return game will be.

Notes:

Storm were missing players Mike Elwood & Bryan Culliford & the Warriors were missing players Chris Harper, Mo 'Scottie' Jama & Leighton Coles

Game MVP - Edris (Eddie) Kizito

Warriors Latest Player Signing's:

Asa Waite, who has played the the past few season in the English National D1 league for the Cardiff Celts & the Bristol Academy Flyers is the latest player to join the re-vamped Cardiff Warriors for 2010/11

At 6'3, Asa is an amazinly athletic player, capable of playing multiple positions & almost impossible to stop in a one on one match-up, he has also represented the Welsh International squad multiple times. We are extremely happy to have him with the Warriors given his availability!

                    Asa Waite

Sid Khan, has decided to join us after playing for the cross town rival Cardiff Capitals for the past two seasons, he has been one of, if not the best player on their roster during that period, averaging 23points, 5steals, 5assists & 4rebounds per game for the Capitals in 2010

Sid has also previously played basketball in Riverside, California until he picked up an injury. A very prolific scorer who is sure to add even more firepower to our offence, we are excited to have him for the 2010/11 season!

                       Sid Khan

Leighton Coles,  who was the was also the player/coach for the Barry Huskies last season has decided to join the Warriors & reunite with his former coach (Harper) after many years of playing for Barry in D1.

Leighton has also played at national league level with Swindon, & has experience of coaching at the college & highschool levels. He should provide a great play making & leadership role for us.

STUART ROBBINS (JUICE) 1976-2010

Dear All, The following message was emailed to us from Gavin Williams yesterday...

"It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Senior Welsh International Stuart Robbins who passed away suddenly in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday morning aged just 33.

Stuart has many close friends and colleagues who play in our league and therefore I think it would be a fitting tribute to hold a minutes applause before all upcoming SWVL matches.

An instruction will be sent out to all officials,
Regards, Gavin Williams"

We would like to give our respects from all of us at the entire Cardiff Warriors Organisation that knew Stuart

.. Rest In Peace Juice..

JULY 2009:

CHRIS HARPER RETURNS TO CARDIFF BASKETBALL

Cardiff City's premier Basketball club, "The Cardiff Warriors" have signed british basketball legend & former 1985 NBA draft pick Chris Harper as their new head Coach/Player for the upcoming 2009/10 season

You only have to listen to Coach Harper speak for a short time before you sense his enthusiasm and passion for the game of basketball, a game that he plays & coaches with intensity and emotion.

The legedary American guard /coach seems rejuvanated to be once again involved with Cardiff Basketball, having spent many years away from the sport in the city he has called home for almost two decades..

Born in southern California, Chris started playing Basketball at the age of 7 having been encouraged by his brother’s best friend.

From the very start he was hooked on the game that was to become such a big part in his life and give him so many opportunities.

One of those opportunities he has had is to travel and Chris has played basketball in Germany, Israel, UK, US and New Zealand.

He was taking part in trials in Israel when he picked up an ankle injury that snatched away his chances to play there and forced him back on a plane home to the States.

Chris had played college basketball while studying for his degree in Speech and Community Relations at The University of Oregon and was selected by the Sanantonio Spurs in the 1985 NBA DRAFT, which included NBA legends like Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone & Joe Dumars.

But it was while teaching and coaching at the Foothill Community College 17 years ago that Chris first got the call to cross the Atlantic and play basketball in Britain.

Chris arrived in Cardiff where he would play for the next six years for the Cardiff Heat & Phoenix, where he and his family still live and where he works as a nurse in a Psychiatric Hospital caring for patients with challenging behaviour.

After his six years playing in Cardiff, two of them seeing Chris team up with former team mate Richard Moses as co-managers, Chris moved south to play two seasons with Solent Stars & then moved onto the Coventry Crusaders.

Off the court much of Chris' time is dedicated to his family, but he does like to unwind by watching manchester united football club, listening to music or going fishing when time allows.

Chris is exited to now have the opportunity to bring his experience and enthusiasm back to Cardiff & make a push to enter the natinal ranks again in the near future. .

His goal now is to dominate the welsh league's & once again return to the EBL national league in the near future!
